Dear students,

Today's activity of Genre-based Writing Class is writing a News Item text. This text has a social function to inform readers events of the day which are considered newsworthy or important. It also has a set of schematic structure that covers heading, newsworthy event (s), background event(s), and sources. Beside that this text uses some linguistic features that characterize this genre. The linguistic features of this text are 1) a short and telegraphic headline, 2) action verbs to retell stories, 3) verbal verbs to project a source stage, 4) focusing on circumstantial meanings, and 5) dramatic use of participant structure.
